Sewer works in Harkaway from March 2023

South East Water has been working with the City of Casey, under their Domestic Wastewater Management Plan, to identify areas where household waste from failing septic systems is polluting groundwater and the environment. Harkaway has been identified as an area where this is occurring.

To remove this risk for the community, we're extending the sewerage network to 104 properties in the Harkaway area, to reduce the use of existing onsite septic tanks on smaller blocks (under 0.4 hectares).

What we're doing

We're constructing the Harkaway Pressure Sewer Scheme to reduce the use of existing onsite septic tanks on smaller blocks (under 0.4 hectares).

We’ve also engaged with customers on larger blocks on the periphery of the scheme to determine their interest in having the sewer extended to their properties enabling them to connect. The map below shows the final alignment of the new sewer pipes to be installed.

The construction of the pipeline is now complete, and we're starting to schedule customer connections for February and April 2024. To connect to the sewer, you'll need to contact our Connections Team.

When it's happening

We started work in early March 2023 and planned to take around 15 weeks to finish construction (depending on the weather). We apologise that our final checks and approvals have taken longer than expected.

We're starting to book connections for February and April 2024. Please call our Connections Team on 1800 720 613 to schedule your connection.

You will receive a letter in the New Year inviting you to connect to the new sewer. Then all backlog properties will receive another letter confirming that the Backlog Tarriff Fee will appear on your bill. For more information see the Know your costs fact sheet below.

What might impact you

We’ll do our best to keep impacts to a minimum, however these are the kinds of things you might notice while we work:

  • More trucks on the streets around you.
  • Less car parks on some streets.
  • Noise from machinery, like beepers when trucks reverse.
  • A change in normal traffic flow around the works area.
  • If required, our traffic management team will be around to make sure people, bikes and cars can move around safely.
Don't miss these details

We’re starting to book connections for February and April 2024. Please call our Connections Team to schedule your connection.

Properties under 0.4 hectares are eligible to connect under the scheme. Any properties over 0.4 hectares or vacant blocks don’t qualify for connection under the scheme, however can still connect if the property fronts the new sewer main for an additional fee.

If your property is within the backlog area and is less than 0.4 hectares, you will receive a letter from us in 2024 confirming when the Backlog Tariff Fee will be added to your bill.

See below for the project FAQ, information on costs, and our hardship policy for those experiencing financial difficulties.
