Sewer works in South Melbourne

You might not notice a lot of the work we do because most of it is beneath your feet. Every day, we’re maintaining and upgrading the pipes and pumps that keep the sewerage network flowing- that’s why we’ll be installing a new sewer main and pump station in South Melbourne and Southbank as part of the South Melbourne Sewer Upgrade.

Due to the size of the project, we've split it into three stages. Stage 1 of the project was completed in February 2024. We’re now preparing for stage 2.

Project benefits

Meet Melbourne’s growing needs by increasing the capacity of the sewer network in South Melbourne and Southbank

Future proof South Melbourne and Southbank sewerage network by minimising the risk of sewer surges during extreme weather events

Stage 1 - Completed

Stage 1 was completed in February 2024. This stage included construction of a new sewer and maintenance holes along Stead Street and Palmerston Crescent, South Melbourne.

Stage 2 - Current

You may have already seen us in the area conducting investigative works. Service relocating will begin November 2026, with construction works planned to commence in mid-2027.

Stage 3 - In planning

These works will involve re-lining the existing sewer under Kingsway, South Melbourne. We’ll use a specialised re-lining technique which means we won’t need to dig any trenches to complete the works.
