Dingley recycled water project hits halfway milestone with 20km of pipeline

South East Water’s Dingley Recycled Water Scheme is approaching the halfway mark, with 27 km of pipeline now installed from Black Rock to Bangholme, bringing Melbourne’s south-east one step closer to year-round green spaces.

Once complete, the scheme will provide up to 1.8 billion litres of recycled water each year, supporting more than 40 parks, golf courses, sports ovals, nurseries and market gardens, keeping them green all year round.

Construction of a new pump station at Braeside Park is now underway. The pump station will pump Class A recycled water through the 42-kilometre pipeline, helping save precious drinking water and make good use of treated wastewater.

South East Water General Manager Liveable Water Solutions Charlie Littlefair said the achievement highlights strong momentum on the recycled water project critical to improving Melbourne’s water security.

“Installing more than 20 km of pipeline is a significant milestone and shows the strong progress we’re making on delivering this important piece of infrastructure.

“Every pipe brings us closer to providing a reliable, climate-resilient water source that will support local communities and green spaces for decades to come,” Mr Littlefair said.

Upcoming pipeline works across Dingley Village, Clarinda and Oakleigh South will connect nearby golf courses, nurseries and sporting ovals to recycled water.

ABK Joint Venture, a partnership between Abergeldie, BMD and KBR, is delivering the scheme for South East Water.

ABK Program Director, Daniel Turcinovich, said reaching the halfway milestone was a significant achievement for the project team and the partnership with South East Water.

“We’re excited to be working with South East Water to support the expansion of Melbourne’s recycled water network. Through this partnership, we’re helping deliver infrastructure that will unlock greater use of recycled water and strengthen Melbourne’s long-term water security.

“The pump station is one of the Scheme's most important pieces of infrastructure, so seeing it near completion is a major achievement. It brings the project another step closer to delivering recycled water across Melbourne’s south-east.”

Expanding recycled water infrastructure and providing a climate resilient source of water plays an important role in securing drinking water supplies for the future which is a key objective outlined in the Victorian Government’s $56.6 million investment in the Central and Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy.

The Victorian Government has contributed $24 million towards the Dingley Recycled Water Scheme which is expected to start delivering recycled water in 2027.
