Sewer works in your area from early September 2024

You might not notice a lot of the work we do because most of it is beneath your feet. Every day, we’re maintaining and upgrading the pipes and pumps that keep the sewage network flowing.

With some upcoming works in Port Melbourne, you might see us or our delivery partner Beca, Fulton Hogan, Interflow Joint Venture (BFHI) around. Here's what to expect while we get the job done.

Salmon Street and Turner Street traffic impacts

So far, most of our work has been located within the Fisherman’s Bend Innovation Precinct where we are constructing five maintenance holes and installing new sewerage pipe. The next phase of the project involves constructing a further maintenance hole within the intersection of Salmon Street and Turner Street. This will connect the new sewerage pipe to the existing pump station and local sewer system.

To safely complete this work, a temporary road closure will be in place at the intersection of Salmon Street and Turner Street from Monday 21 July 2025 to Friday 31 October 2025.

During this period, the footpath and right turning lane into Salmon Street from Turner Street will be closed. Vehicles will also not be able to access Turner Street from Salmon Street, with a detour in place.

You can see the traffic control and detour maps below.

What we're doing

This project will extend the existing sewer network to facilitate the future relocation of the Salmon Street Pump Station. This will increase the capacity of the sewer network to cater for population growth in the area and future proof the sewerage system. We'll complete the works in 3 stages.

This first stage of works will involve the construction of a new sewer from the intersection of Turner Street and Salmon Street along Caprice Avenue, Port Melbourne.

Once this stage of works is complete, we'll be able to move to stage 2 and 3, where we'll construct the new pump station and decommission the old pump station. We'll let you know before we start those works.

When it's happening

We started works in October 2024 and expect to be completed in December 2025 (weather permitting).

Change traffic conditions on Salmon Street and Turner Street from Monday 21 July 2025 to Friday 31 October 2025.

You can expect us to work Monday to Friday between 7 am and 6 pm and Saturdays between 7am and 5pm. On the odd occasion, we might need to work at other times for safety, technical or permit reasons.

What might impact you

We’ll do our best to keep impacts to a minimum, however these are the kinds of things you might notice while we work:

  • Construction activity within the intersection of Salmon Street and Turner Street, including disturbance from noise and vibration. The loudest activities will be at the start of the work during saw cutting and excavation.
  • Change traffic conditions on Salmon Street and Turner Street. Traffic control will be in place, including temporary traffic lights, road closures and detours to safely guide you around our work area. Some delays may be experienced especially during peak traffic. See maps below.
  • More trucks on the streets around you.
  • Construction noise from machinery including beepers when trucks reverse and the use of heavy machinery.
  • Construction staff  around to make sure people, bikes and cars can move around safely. You'll still have access to footpaths and businesses in the area.

Don't miss these details

We’re working with our delivery partner, BFHI, to help us.

You shouldn’t notice any change to South East Water services while we work. When we have finished the job, we’ll leave things how we found them to make sure that we return any areas we’ve impacted as close as possible to their original condition.
