South Melbourne Sewerage Capacity Upgrade
Major sewer works planned for South Melbourne and Southbank
The current sewer pipes in South Melbourne are nearing 100 years old. To ensure we cater for future population growth we're planning a major upgrade to the sewer network in South Melbourne and Southbank.
This project will be split into 4 stages. For more information about each stage, please see below.
The Benefits:
Protect South Melbourne from extreme weather events
During extreme weather events, rain can find its way into our sewerage system and cause sewer overflows. This project will reduce the risk of overflows and continue to protect the health of our communities and environment.
Meet South Melbourne's growing needs
This project will increase the volume of our pipes to ensure we meet Melbourne's growing needs.
Project Stages:
Due to the size of the project we've split it into four stages.
Stage 1
This stage of the upgrade has been completed, including construction of a new sewer and manholes along Stead Street and Palmerston Crescent on either side of Kings Way.
Additional Sewer Re-lining Works
Whilst working on stage 1 we noticed that some sections of sewerage pipes along City Road and Moray Street, South Melbourne had reached the end of their service life. It's critical we re-line these as soon as possible. We'll do this work at night when the flows in the sewer are low.
This work will take place before Stage 2 starts and will take two weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Stage 2
Works for stage 2 will involve:
- building a new sewage pump station on Market Street, South Melbourne; and
- installing new sewer pipes to connect into our stage 1 works.
We've yet to award this stage of the project to a delivery partner. We'll let you know when we've awarded it.
Stages 3 and 4
Stages 3 and 4 will be delivered in future Pricing Submissions and we're still in the early stages of planning. We'll provide you with more information on these stages once we know more.
We anticipate these stages to include the relining the existing Hanna Street Sewer that runs beneath Kings Way and then duplicating the Wells Street Sewer.
The map below shows the proposed area of the project and its stages.
