Frequently Asked Questions

A check meter is an additional meter South East Water can install so that you’ll have visibility of your property’s water usage.

Before you install a check meter, you’ll need to apply via the PropertyConnect. Under Multiple units - click on Residential and log in. We'll then assess your application and send you a notice of agreement and an owner permission form.

More information about check meters

South East Water is responsiblity is up until the main meter.

The responsibility of the pipes and network after this main meter, including the cost of any additional meters (inc individual check meters), is the responsibility of the property owner. South East Water is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of these additional meters only.

For more information visit ‘Paying for utilities and services’ on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website.

If you have negotiated to pass these charges onto the tenant, water usage charges are clearly outlined on the bill for the property.

South East Water is only able to directly charge a residential tenant for water usage if the property they live at is separately metered, in accordance with Section 273A(1)(b) of the Water Act 1989 (Victoria).

To ensure we comply with the act, we bill landlords or owners for water usage at their property if an individual check meter isn't in place.

If you have a tenant living at your property, we have contacted them to know about the set up.

I’m not happy about this decision and I want to speak to someone at South East Water.
