Say hello to digital water meters

We’re excited to be rolling out new digital technology across our service area. With a digital water meter it's easier for you to track water usage, make changes to how much water you use, and save money on bills.

We’ll be installing digital meters across South East Melbourne until 2029.

What is a digital meter?

A digital water meter is similar to the current water meter called an analogue meter at your property. They both measure how much water you use but digital meters record your water use more regularly and help identify leaks, which if fixed quickly, save water and money.

When it comes to managing water usage, we know that every drop counts.

Save money with leak alerts

  • Money, like water, is much better saved. With your new digital water meter, you can do both. If your digital meter detects water continuously flowing, there’s a chance it’s a leak. We’ll let you know as soon as this happens, so you can quickly fix the issue.
  • Leak notifications also help us build a stronger network, so we can make improvements and reduce major leaks or network issues.. Stopping leaks sooner means conserving our precious drinking water.

Businesses getting digital meters

Residential properties will be receiving digital water meters first. Some business properties with a standard analogue water meter may receive a digital meter as part of the initial installation program.

We’re adding data loggers to some larger analogue water meters for businesses. We’ll be working on installing digital meters for properties that have larger meters (over 25mm) in the next stage. Keep an eye out for further details on our website.

What's happening with digital water meters?

We’re rolling out digital meters across South East Melbourne over the next five years. Digital water meters help our customers learn more about their water usage, find leaks and save on water bills.

What you need to know about digital meters

Digital meters are installed and activated by South East Water. Plumbers do not install water meters. They are the same size as analogue meters, so they fit in the same locations when they are installed.

Like an analogue meter, they record water usage data but digital meters are more granular and show water use over a 24 hour period. Data is then uploaded directly to South East Water overnight. Customer can access their data through mySouthEastWater.

  • Usage is shown in litres (L)
  • Bills are calculated in kilolitres (Kl), there are 1,000 litres in a kilolitre
  • Usage data is refreshed daily by 9am with the previous days usage
  • Digital recycled water meters are purple, the same as analogue recycled meters. They are shown separately on mySouthEastWater

If there are any issues or concerns about a meter, please contact 132 812.

How to help customers identify leaks

Digital meters enable us to send leak alerts to customers quickly, so they can save more water and money. We suggest that customers check for leaks before contacting a plumber. You may need to assist customers in identifying where a leak may be following one of these notifications.
