We're sincerely sorry for your loss and we acknowledge that this can be a stressful time.

What should I do?
Losing a loved one can be a highly stressful time with a lot to take care of. Calling up the water company isn't likely to be high on the agenda, but it is important to notify us as soon as you can.
The first thing you can do when it comes to the water account of your loved one, is to let us know so we can place a hold on the account, this means you wont have to worry about paying the account right away.
What happens when a property owner passes away?
If the account is in joint names, once we’re notified the account name will be amended and all future accounts will be sent out in the remaining owners name/s.
If there is only one name on the account, once we’re notified the account name will be amended to ‘The Estate of...’ and debt collection will remain on hold until the sale of the property or change of ownership has been finalised.
What happens to any outstanding accounts?
Responsibility for paying the bills, usually lies with the Estate. It isn't normally the executor's, next of kin, or relatives responsibility.
Once probate has been completed and the estate has settled, the owner information details will be updated on the Victorian Register of land
Once this has happened, your solicitor will need to send us a copy of the new title and we'll we’ll change the name on the account. The current account will be closed, and a new account will be created with the new owners’ details.
It is important to note, that usage and service charges will continue to be billed even after your loved ones passing and will be issued with the final statement.
What happens when a renter passes away?
If your loved one was a renter and the only renter at the property, please let us know as soon as possible, so we can close the account.
If there are other renters at the property (even if they weren't on the account) we will remove your loved ones name and create a brand new account in the other renters name.
If you feel comfortable, please contact us on 131 851 to let us know if an account holder has passed away. Alternatively, you can email us at support@sew.com.au.
