South East Water is upgrading an existing wastewater lagoon at the Boneo Water Recycling Plant to manage increased flows during wet weather events.

The new emergency storage lagoon will allow the water utility to hold up to 8.9 million litres of wastewater coming through the southern Mornington Peninsula sewer network.

Acting General Manager Service Delivery, Andrew Forster-Knight said the emergency storage would improve plant reliability and reduce the impact of extreme wet weather events driven by climate change.

“Our customers count on our safe and reliable wastewater services every day and night, especially during extreme wet weather events.

“We’re upgrading this important asset to help manage potential wastewater overflows, to reduce spills into the environment, and to ensure the reliability of our wastewater collection and treatment services."
Acting General Manager Service Delivery, Andrew Forster-Knight

Construction of the emergency storage lagoon is due for completion in January 2025 by South East Water's integrated, planning and delivery partners, Beca, Fulton Hogan, Interflow Joint Venture (BHFI).

To ensure the future treatment of wastewater for the southern Mornington Peninsula, the emergency storage lagoon is the final asset South East Water is delivering as part of a major upgrade to the plant.
