Preparation key to bushfire safety
With the Fire Danger Period now underway, the risk of bushfires in Melbourne’s south-east has risen.
South East Water is urging customers and the community to prepare for potential impacts on water supply during a bushfire.
High water demand from customers and fire services during a fire can reduce water pressure, cause discolouration, or interrupt supply to some properties.
In extreme cases, fires may damage South East Water infrastructure, causing prolonged supply interruptions.
Residents shouldn’t rely solely on mains water supply during a bushfire. Those living near forests, bush, grasslands, or coastal areas should prepare a contingency supply of safely stored fresh water as part of their fire plan.
This can include using water from tanks, dams, or swimming pools, or pre-filling containers such as wheelie bins, bathtubs, or laundry tubs. A generator to power pumps can also be beneficial if electricity is lost.
South East Water General Manager Service Delivery, Tim Lloyd, said the utility has processes and precautions in place to minimise the chance of disruptions during an unexpected bushfire.
“Bushfires can be unpredictable, and like many of our customers, we’re preparing for the season by ensuring our systems have backups and safeguards.”
“We encourage everyone in high-risk areas to have a reliable backup plan for their water supply in the unlikely event of prolonged disruptions."
