Brighton’s century-old pipes upgraded for a reliable future
South East Water is upgrading water mains across Brighton to improve reliability and future-proof essential services for the local community.
The works are replacing ageing cast iron pipes installed more than a century ago with modern infrastructure designed to meet current and future needs.
Brighton’s water mains: A look back
- New Street – Built in 1871 with a 150mm cast iron pipe.
- Cole Street – Connected off New Street, built in 1928 with a 100mm cast iron cement-lined pipe.
- Huntley Street – Built in 1892 with a 100mm cast iron pipe.
- Westley Avenue – Built in 1916 with a 100mm cast iron pipe.
South East Water’s industry partner Beca Fulton Hogan Interflow (BFHI) is delivering the works using trenchless technology to minimise disruption. Temporary water connections will keep residents connected and ensure a safe and reliable supply throughout the works.
South East Water General Manager Liveable Water Solutions, Charlie Littlefair said the upgrades mark a significant milestone for Brighton.
“Some of these pipes date back to the late 1800s. By upgrading them, we’re making sure Brighton customers continue to enjoy safe, reliable water for generations to come.
“Replacing pipes that have served the community for more than a century is a big step in maintaining essential services and protecting the environment, while keeping disruption to a minimum,” Mr Littlefair said.
Traffic management will be in place during works. South East Water will notify customers in advance of any temporary water supply interruptions. When works are complete, all areas will be reinstated as close as possible to their original condition.
