In some cases, it is possible to get an exemption from Stage 3 water restrictions.

How does it work?

You will need to apply for exemptions to Stage 3 water restrictions by providing details of the restrictions that you are seeking exemption from and details as to why you think an exemption is needed.

Will the exemptions that were awarded under Stage 3a still remain in place?

Yes, on this occasion exemptions granted under Stage 3a will remain in place, however water utilities will continue to review on an ongoing basis.  Water utilities will continue to work with businesses on the development of their Water Conservations Plans and may also choose to review these, as appropriate.

All exemptions currently issued will be reviewed by your water retailer and you will be advised in writing as to whether your exemption can continue.

Warm Season Lawn - 28 Day Exemption

The 28 Day Exemption – to transition to warm season grass provides Melbourne residents with the ability apply to use potable (drinking) water to establish warm season grass.

As the name suggests, the exemption applies to the establishment (watering) of warm season grass only, with all other aspects of water restrictions still in place. After the exemption period ends, applicants are subject to the full breadth of current watering restrictions – which prohibits the watering of grassed areas at any time with drinking water.
