New lease of life for Mentone, Parkdale, Mordialloc 1930s sewers

11.05.2017

As part of its commitment to delivering reliable and safe water and sewer services, South East Water is commencing a $2.6 million project to renew a pair of eighty-year-old sewer mains spanning the suburbs of Mentone, Parkdale and Mordialloc.

The eight-week project will use innovative relining technology to minimise disruption to the community while extending the life and increasing the reliability of these important assets. These large diameter sewers service over 5600 properties between Mentone and Mordialloc, with more than 200 homes directly connected to them.

The sewer sections to be renewed are:

  • along Beach Road from Mundy Street in Mentone to Bear St near Chute Street in Mordialloc, and
  • in between the Nepean Highway and the Frankston railway line, from Flinders Street in Mentone, to White Street near Chute Street in Mordialloc.

Construction is commencing this week at the northern end of each sewer, and will progress in stages in a southerly direction. Water and sewerage services will not be affected by the project.

“Relining the existing sewers not only reduces the risk of blockage and service interruption in the future, but can also be undertaken without the need for costly and disruptive excavation,” said Rohan Ogier, Acting General Manager for Asset Creation at South East Water.

“It enables us to future-proof our network quickly and cost-effectively, while continuing to provide the services our customers expect,” said Mr Ogier.

The majority of works will be undertaken at night from Sunday to Thursday between 8pm and 7am, when flows will be at their lowest, enabling crews to work safely in a ‘dry’ sewer. Day works may be required for safety or technical reasons.

South East Water is working closely with the community to minimise disruption and will notify directly affected residents along the sewer alignment before works commence in their area. Some driveways may need to be restricted, however residents will be notified of this at least 24 hours in advance.

There are no anticipated road closures during these works, however there may be minor delays along Beach Road, White Street and Bear Street. Traffic management will be in place in and around work zones to ensure safe pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle movements.

Beach Road will remain open to all traffic in both directions, however a southbound lane closure will be in place for short sections from Mentone to Mordialloc. A lane closure will also impact traffic travelling east along Centre Way to Main Street, Mordialloc. Motorists and cyclists are encouraged to take extra care when passing work zones.

Last year South East Water replaced more than 33km of water pipe and 29 kilometres of sewer pipe across its service region, and spent more than $143 million in capital projects.
