High time for underground makeover in Prahran East Village

As part of its commitment to delivering reliable and safe water and sewer services into the future, South East Water is commencing the renewal of a 100-year-old water main on High Street Prahran, with works starting this week.

The 10-week project along the northern side of High Street between Williams Road and Grandview Grove involves the replacement of 500 metres of cast iron water pipe originally laid in 1909, before the first trams travelled along the Prahran East route.

“As we plan for the future, and determine where to focus our investments, customers tell us that water service reliability and quality must remain our top priority,” said Charlie Littlefair, General Manager Asset Creation at South East Water.

“The existing cast-iron main has served us well, but it’s time to update this important piece of infrastructure and ensure residents and businesses have a high quality supply they can rely on into the future.”

Construction will commence on the corner of Williams Road and High Street and will progress in three stages in an easterly direction towards Armadale. Water and sewerage services will not be affected by the project. Works will be undertaken at night from Sunday to Thursday between 6.30 pm and 6.00 am, although some day works may be required for safety reasons, or where noise levels may be high.

South East Water is working closely with VicRoads, Yarra Trams and the local community to minimise disruption, and is notifying affected businesses and residents before works commence. Properties directly fronting the water main renewal will be connected to a temporary water supply to ensure continuity of a clean and safe water supply

The adjoining side streets of Joyce Street, Chatsworth Road and Park Road will require short road closures for between two and three nights, with detours in place whilst these works are undertaken. Only one road closure will occur at a time as the work crew progresses along High Street and across each of the adjoining intersections, to minimise impact on traffic.

Last year South East Water replaced more than 33 kilometres of water pipe and 34 kilometres of sewer pipe across its service region, and spent more than $25 million enhancing the reliability of its network for customers.
